Isle of May - March 2010
Just after 11 I received a text from Iain McBride asking if I was interested in a trip out to the Isle Of May. Iain, Angus and Calum planned to leave from Anstruther at 1, which meant I had to quickly grab a bite to eat and hastily get my kit together. Unfortunately the traffic wasn’t too kind and I didn’t arrive until a little after 1. On the water by 1:30 which meant it would be a little tight in getting back before dark. We were prepared with head torches and various other lights for navigation.
The island is just under 5 nautical miles out. Iain and I arrived ahead of Angus and Calum who had decided to go the scenic route, or didn’t compensate for the tidal flow. There was a bit of a swell so we waited inside a small bay. This gave us the chance to have a close look at the remains of a wrecked ship. Once we were all back together we paddled clockwise around the island. The swell added a bit of fun to the easterly side while we tried to find the harbour.
After a quick break on the island we headed on round the southern end. The swell didn’t reach this side so gave us a chance to investigate some caves and pass the time of day with the inquisitive seals.
The final part was the long trip back to shore with the sun setting and darkness approaching we arrived back at 6:15.
